US Festivals Coachella and Lollapalooza have now listed selfie sticks as ‘prohibited items’.
The website Brooklyn Vegan noted that on the FAQ section of Lollapalooza’s website, it states that no ‘GoPro attachments like sticks, selfie sticks & monopods’ should be brought to the festival which takes place in Chicago this summer. Similarly, Coachella’s official site states that ‘selfie sticks/Narcissists’ are banned from attendance.
Other North American festivals such as Bonnaroo, Governors Ball and Sasquatch have yet to reveal their position on selfie sticks, but it seems that banning them is becoming something of a trend. Earlier this year, selfie sticks were banned by a number of UK music venues including O2 Academy Brixton and the O2 Arena.
Speaking to NME about the decision to ban the devices from gigs, a spokesperson for The Academy Music Group said: “Selfie sticks are not permitted at Academy Music Group venues. This is in keeping with our existing policy that prohibits the filming and photography during a performance with iPads and other tablet devices and includes any such obstructions for the satisfaction of other customers.”
