Noel Gallagher reveals he lost 's**t load of money' on solo career

The Oasis songwriter on why his own pride prevented a label deal

Noel Gallagher has revealed that he lost millions in a bid to launch his solo career after Oasis split up.

The High Flying Birds man established his own label Sour Mash Records after Oasis split up in 2009 - a decision he has now admitted cost him dearly.

He told Loaded magazine: "Everything I've done since I left Oasis has come from my own pocket. You've got to pay for the tour, got to pay for the wages and you don't really break even for about nine months."

Not only that, but Gallagher also didn't tell his wife Sara MacDonald about the amount of money that was going into supporting the tour. "I don't mean I lost money. I mean I lost a fucking shit load of money. It was a few million, like. I had to lie to Sara at first, and when I eventually did tell her, she freaked out - I mean FREAKED out."

Asked why he chose to go it alone, Noel Gallagher said "I did it because I felt like I could and I didn't want to be signed to a record label, I wanted to di it myself.' Luckily enough it's worked out."

Gallagher's right - his second album Chasing Yesterday became the fastest-selling LP of the year, although he does know that the appetite for albums has fallen significantly since his days in Oasis. "I don't worry about the music getting to number one or anything. I never have done really. Well, maybe I did between 1994 and '97, back when I wanted to rule the world…  People aren't buying as many records as they were four years ago so sales are likely to decline, but it won't make it any less a record."

Gallagher is still among the rumoured acts to top the bill at Glastonbury this year. He is also headlining London's Calling Festival and appearing at T In The Park.  He is also playing a huge homecoming show this summer at Manchester's Summer In The City at the legendary Castlefield Bowl.
