Toro Y Moi is streaming his new album in full, a week ahead of it's release. Listen below.
Known for his part in the so-called 'chillwave' movement, the fourth record sees (real name) Chaz Bundick move away from that sound and into a decidely folk-ier, less pigeon-holed direction.
“I’ve done electronic R&B and more traditional recorded type R&B stuff," says Bundick of the album. "I just wanted to see what else was out there. It’s all coming from the same mindset and point of creativity. It’s just me trying to take what I already have, and then take it further.”
The release also explained the message behind the new album: “What For? is a glimpse into the life of a guy trying to figure out what it all means. It has that special something that Chaz imbues in every Toro y Moi album, his personal filter on the world he experiences. So whatever message you take from the album, don’t forget that it’s good.”
So far the artist has released the fuller, funkier sounding tracks 'Empty Nesters', 'Buffalo' and Run Baby Run' from the record, which comes out via Carpark Records on 7th April.
