Kendrick Lamar has announced his engagement and opened up about his battle with depression in a series of new interviews to promote his new album.

To Pimp A Butterfly, his third record and follow-up to Good Kid m.A.A.D City, was released last month.

During an interview with Power 105.1’s morning show The Breakfast Club this week, Lamar was asked if the rumours he was engaged to childhood sweetheart, Whitney Alford were true. Confirming the news, he told the station: "I'm loyal to the soil. At the end of the day you want to always have real people around you, period - whether male or female."

Lamar had previously discussed his relationship with Alford to Billboard, saying: "I wouldn't even call her my girl. That's my best friend. I don't even like the term that society has put in the world as far as being a companion - she's somebody I can tell my fears to."

Meanwhile, Lemar also revealed he has experienced 'suicidal thoughts' in the past. He told MTV: "Three of my homeboys (one) summertime was murdered, close ones too, not just somebody that I hear about. These (are) people I grew up with. It all, psychologically, it messes your brain up. You live in this life, you know what I'm saying, but you still have to face realities of this. I gotta get back off that tour bus and go to these funerals... Talk to my mom and talk to their aunties -- the kids that lost their lives."

Lamar recently said that he and Prince hit the studio together last October although sadly they didn't have enough time to complete any tracks.
