XL Records owner Richard Russell has teamed up with reggae pioneer Lee Scratch Perrry for a truly unique release.
Putting the twin powerhouses of Tidal and Record Store Day to shame, Russell has teamed up with Perry for a special release under the pseudonym RLR. Accompanying a new track produced by Russell on their website (listen here) is a message explaining the unique delivery method - and how the track came to be at Perry's studio in Switzerland.
"This is the song 'I Am Paint' by RLR. There are are 250 12" copies of 'I Am Paint'. The tune was made by Richard Russell and samples the voice of Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The sleeve for each vinyl single was individually hand painted by Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Richard Russell as the White Ark, Einsiedeln, Switzerland.
If you wish to pptain a copy, we do not require paymnet but are instead using a system of barter. Simply make something you wish to swap and send it to Residence La Revolution, PO Box 68452 London W11 9EZ and you will be send a hand painted 12" in return while stocks last."
As Paper Magazine reports, one person who has already taken part is YoYo's Seb Chew, who has submitted a piece of artwork based on the profanities in Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly.
Russell has previously produced some of Gigwise's favourite releases including work with Gil Scott Heron, Bobby Womack, Damon Albarn and Ibeyi.
