Great Defenders - 'Re-Record'

Great Defenders - 'Re-Record' Photo:

Great Defenders' debut single 'Re-Record' gives the impression of having fallen through time from somewhere around 1996, when bands like Snug and Salako were free to go about creating daft keyboard-inflected pop-rock without worrying about the skinniness of their jean or the angle of their trilby. Sounding not unlike the start of the Only Fools & Horses theme tune, 'Re-Record' sails a little close to the wind of self-conscious wackyness at times but is nonetheless enjoyably unhinged. The self-titled b-side sounds almost too like Super Furry Animals' 'Man Don't Give a Fuck', but benefits from great harmonies and a bouncing bassline. Not a must-buy, but Great Defenders have a casual disregard for the zeitgeist which marks them out as worth looking out for.

Released 14/01/08.
