Anni Rossi - 'Wheelpusher'

Anni Rossi - 'Wheelpusher' Photo:

Your love of Anni Rossi, or lack thereof, will largely depend on whether you can handle her quirky vocal style. Like Joanna Newsom before her, Rossi's squeaky and strangely inflected vocals will polarise opinion more than a certain popular yeast-based spread. 'Wheelpusher' sees Rossi singing and playing viola, backed only by the clicking of her heels on the floor. Reputedly this makes for a superb live show, but hearing it on CD is a bit like listening to boxing on the radio: you know it must be a visceral experience at the scene of the action, but the audio alone leaves you feeling strangely disconnected and underwhelmed.
