There's an unique atmosphere that comes with artists that are signed to Communion. A clandestine majesty that stirs feelings of often great strife and occasionally the warming of lounging by an open fire, Starling's new track lands somewhere between the two.
Set up by Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett, Communion is currently hosting one of the strongest rosters of new talent in the UK. With Frances, Bear's Den, Tennis and the now global, Catfish and the Bottlemen, it's not the worst springboard for a new artist.
Starting off with Joni Mitchell and Bill Withers covers, Starling's musical education was grounded in depth and complexity, it's unsurprising that her own creations mimic the emotional resonance of these classic artists. Drawing a striking similarity to Lorde in the vocals, Starling deviates from comparison with uniquely broody instrumentals and a constantly emanating 'dark warmth'.
