Last night the sad news broke that Percy Sledge, the legendary US soul singer, has died aged 74.

Though he's probably best known for 'When A Man Loves A Woman', in 1967 Sledge put his own soulful spin on James Carr's 'The Dark End Of The Street'. This cover is considered to be one of Sledge's greatest recordings.

Nearly 50 years later, an entirely different soul singer - Hozier - covered the song in session for Gigwise. Speaking of the song, Hozier said, " The first thing I listen to when I listen to music is the lyrics, and I really like the lyrics of that song. It's a classic soul song. I've always love it, and I've never done it for a cover session before."

It seemed only fitting, by way of commemorating the past and celebrating the future, that we revisit Hozier's beautiful and reverent cover of 'The Dark End Of The Street' in light of the sad news of Percy Sledge's passing.
