Last night the sad news broke that Percy Sledge, the legendary US soul singer, has died aged 74.
Though he's probably best known for 'When A Man Loves A Woman', in 1967 Sledge put his own soulful spin on James Carr's 'The Dark End Of The Street'. This cover is considered to be one of Sledge's greatest recordings.
Nearly 50 years later, an entirely different soul singer - Hozier - covered the song in session for Gigwise. Speaking of the song, Hozier said, " The first thing I listen to when I listen to music is the lyrics, and I really like the lyrics of that song. It's a classic soul song. I've always love it, and I've never done it for a cover session before."
