Jamie xx has been announced as a collaborator with the National Gallery for an audio-visual exhibition.
The exhibition, called Soundscapes, will see a number of musicians and sound artists creating a piece of music based on a gallery painting of their choice. Launching in the summer, each artist taking part will take over a sound proof room in the Gallery's Sainsbury Wing. Jamie xx, Nico Muhly, Chris Watson, Janet Cardiff, George Bures Miller, Gabriel Yared and Susan Philipsz comprise the full list of collaborators.
Dr Nicholas Penny, the director of the National Gallery, spoke about the project, saying, "When sounds have been composed in response to a work of art they can encourage - even compel - concentration. Furthermore, it can combine with an image to capitivate and transport us. Silence, afterwards, is not the same!"
