The skill of DJing is set to be included in the Music GCSE syllabus from 2016, with new proposals from the exam board AQA.

The new inclusion is set to be an option in the solo performance part of the examination, where students would need to showcase scratching, mixing and preperarion for sets. The proposal is awaiting authorisation from exam regulators Ofqual.

This idea has already received some opposition from Chris McGovern of the Campaign for Real Education, in an interview with BBC Newsbeat he said he "would not be in favour of this kind of thing" and went on to explain "It would not impress an employer in the same way as knowing about Beethoven or Mozart."

Seb Ross, head of AQA Music defended the proposal: "They originally said that jazz wasn't real music, and they said it about rock and pop too. Dance music - like any kind of music - is about performing with skill and understanding how music creates mood and meaning... there's a huge amount of musical understanding behind this and DJing is hugely relevant to today's students."

GCSE Music has been experiencing a series of change-ups recently when it was reported that The Beatles' legendary 1967 album Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band would be taught to students.
