The future of BoomTown Fair has been thrown into doubt after the estate on which it is held has been refused a lawful development certificate.
The festival, which this year hosts the likes of Gogol Bordello, Noisia, Mungo's Hi Fi, Amadou & Mariam, Gentleman's Dub Club and The John Butler Trio, is set to take place at Hampshire's Matterley Estate between 13 and 16 August.
It looks like this could very well be the festival's last year though - the local planning authority has refused the the estate permission to hold non-agricultural events for more than 28 days a year. This includes the time it takes to set each event up. If the rule is breached, the landowner could face legal action.
The festival has now released a statement, which says the refusal of the application "has come rather abruptly in what was perceived to be an ongoing process to understand the benefit of the individual events held at Matterley with regards to economic and cultural input."
The statement adds, "We are unaware of who the complainants are in this situation or what issues were raised but over the past few years BoomTown Fair has worked very closely with the local residents that are most affected by the event."
