Red Hot Chili Peppers paid tribute to the late David Bowie by covering ‘Cracked Actor’ from Aladdin Sane at a Bernie Sanders fundraiser this weekend.

The band’s tribute to the Thin White Duke marked the first band’s first time on stage since Bowie’s passing on 10 January.

Prior to the gig, Chad Smith tweeted a teaser picture of his bass drum, which featured an image of a morphed Sanders and Ziggy Stardust.

@RHCPchad @BernieSanders I think using Bowie like this is fucking despicable.

The band’s cover of ‘Cracked Actor’ was not their first Bowie cover. In 2014, the band released a live performance recording of ‘Suffragette City’ for that year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Covers EP.

Bowie had previously declined collaborating with the 'Californication' band, but it didn't stop Flea from honouring him with a lightning bolt tattoo in the days following his death.

Sanders himself is also using ‘Starman’ as his campaign theme song.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to headline Reading and Leeds this year, which takes place from 26-28 August. Get tickets and more information here.
