Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays Daisy Domergue in Quentin Tarentino’s The Hateful Eight, has now revealed that she was aware the Kurt Russell was destroying a genuine and priceless guitar instead of the dummy.
Instead of smashing a replica guitar in one of the scenes, Russell destroyed an authentic 1870’s Martin, which was a hand crafted museum piece.
In an interview with Billboard, Leigh revealed that her on screen reaction to the guitar smash was genuine as she was fully aware that the guitars had not been swapped.
“I thought we were going to trade out the guitars,” Leigh said. “You’re never going to cut a scene until Quentin says cut. And Kurt thought it must be a dummy guitar. I don’t think Quentin knew that it was the [authentic guitar], either.
"The scene was going exactly the way he wanted it to go, and he wanted to play one scene in the movie in real time without a cut, in one long take. Kurt felt terrible; he had no idea. When he found out, his eyes literally welled up. It ended up being great for the scene, but very sad for the guitar, and for my guitar teacher, and for me.”
At the end of last year, Tarentino admitted that the Ennio Morricone score he used for the Hateful Eight was originally composed for John Carpenter’s 1982 iconic horror film, The Thing.
The Hateful Eight was release in cinemas on 25 December and the soundtrack is available on vinyl via Jack White’s Third Man Records.
