Jay Z is reportedly working on a new album in retaliation to Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
As Us Weekly reports, his rumoured album will tell “his side of things”, following infidelity allegations spun by Bey’s lyrics. If this is the case, is Jay Z confirming that there is truth between the lines, or is he just aware of the money-making potential of a reprisal album?
Considering he owns Tidal, the streaming service responsible for Lemonade’s release, it does seem somewhat strange that he would allow the release of an album that supposedly slanders him and his marriage.
The public have taken to comparing it to previous profit-turning breakup singles, Eamon’s ‘Fuck It (I Don’t Want You Back’) and Frankee’s ‘F.U.R.B (Fuck You Right Back)’. Both singles reached No.1 in 2003 and 2004 – are Jay Z and Beyoncé looking to follow the same path?
While Eamon’s song was still in the writing process, it was revealed that his team were simultaneously auditioning girls for ‘F.U.R.B (Fuck You Right Back)’ in order to get the licensing to use the song in a retaliation hit.
This March, it was exposed that Tidal only has three million paying subscribers worldwide, despite streaming giant Spotify holding thirty million. Under these circumstances, an extra boost in subscribers from Tidal exclusives such as Lemonade may be worth the rumours surrounding the golden couple.
