Poor Ed Sheeran. He was just trying to have a nice quiet year off, no tour, no new albums… and now been landed with another lawsuit, after one of his songs - ‘Thinking Out Loud’ - was deemed to be too similar to Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’.
The singer is already being sued for $20 million over another song, ‘Photograph’, which two musicians believe copies their song, ‘Amazing’, released by none other than X Factor winner Matt Cardle.
‘Let’s Get It On’ is a somewhat less subtle source material if you’re setting out to plagiarise (which no doubt Sheeran wasn’t, on either occasion) - but the family of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the iconic track, believe he copied key parts of the track.
According to the court papers, “The Defendants copied the heart of Let's and repeated it continuously throughout Thinking.”
They continue, “The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions of Thinking are substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition of Let’s.”
Neither Ed Sheeran, nor his record label, have commented publicly on the lawsuit.
