It was announced on Tuesday that British director Steve McQueen will be directing a fully authorised documentary on the life of 2Pac.
The documentary comes following a deal made between the man responsible for handling the Tupac Shakur Estate,Tom Whalley, and Amaru Entertainment, a company founded by the rapper's mother, Afeni Shakur - who passed away last year - to release 2Pac's posthumous projects.
Known for being the director of the Academy Award-winning 12 Years a Slave, McQueen expressed his excitement for being involved in the documentary. "I am extremely moved and excited to be exploring the life and times of this legendary artist," he said. "I attended NYU film school in 1993 and can remember the unfolding Hip Hop world and mine overlapping with 2Pac’s through a mutual friend in a small way. Few, if any shined brighter than Tupac Shakur. I look forward to working closely with his family to tell the unvarnished story of this talented man."
September saw the 20th anniversary of the death of 2Pac after he was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996. Since then the rapper has become the first solo rapper to ever be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and excitement continues to build as the All Eyez On Me biopic, directed by Benny Boom, detailing 2Pac's life will be released June 15th 2017.
His short recording career (1991-1996) led to sales of more than 75 million albums worldwide, he starred in a number of movies and became an inspiring voice when it came to social issues, racial struggles and politics.
