Metallica's self-titled 1991 album has become the first album since the Neilson Soundscan began to surpass 16 million sales.

The album, which is widely referred to as The Black Album, sold an estimated 3,000 copies last week, taking its total US sales to 16,002,000.

23 years after it was first released, the album, which includes well-known songs such as 'Enter Sandman', 'The Unforgiven' and 'Nothing Else Matters', remains widely popular.

In fact, it is one of just two albums to have sold over 15 million copies in the US since Soundscan began tracking sales in 1991 - the only other to do so being Shania Twain's Come On Over. An eclectic pair.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Metallica are set to headline Glastonbury festival in June, which proved a controversial booking.

The Black Album has been certified 16x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
