Kaiser Chiefs kicked off day one of Glastonbury today (Friday 27 June) with what was billed as a 'secret set'.
The 'surprise' gig was confirmed by various publications yesterday, quashing rumours of Coldplay, Prince and The Libertines opening the Other Stage in the slot that Beady Eye filled in 2013.
A huge crowd gathered, waiting in the rain as the downpour eased for the band to arrive on stage. Any doubt among those who hadn't heard the news was destroyed by the band's branded flags and bass drum, before they came on stage to the back of 'War (What Is It Good For)' by Edwin Starr and kicked straight into 'I Predict A Riot'.
The band soon warmed up the bleary-eyed masses with lively banter and Wilson charging from one side of the stage to the other - at one point urging the audience to 'stick two fingers up the sky' and saying to the resting rainclouds: "You can fuck off."
"I have a feeling this is going to be a Glastonbury to remember," said an emotional Wilson before dedicating 'Somewhere Up In Heaven' to 'anyone who's lost someone this year'.
They tore through more hits, ending on 'Oh My God' before half the crowd dispersed to see The War On Drugs on the Pyramid Stage while the rest remained to see Blondie on The Other Stage. Kaiser Chiefs will also headline the John Peel stage tonight.
The rain has eased up, and we have Haim, Chvrches, Lily Allen, Elbow, Arcade Fire and many more to come - so stay tuned to Gigwise for the latest Glasto on-site news, reviews, photos and updates.
