One Direction member Zayn Malikhas become the latest popstar to wade into the Israel/Palestine conflict when he tweeted "#FreePalestine" - a statement which has been met, predictably, with a hugely polarised response, and even death threats.
Historic tensions between the two nations have been escalating violently over the past few weeks, with the people of Gaza having been most affected by Israeli bombings, an act they say is a response to Hamas aggression. Despite a UN-encouraged temporary ceasefire, the situation is ongoing.
Yesterday, Zayn Malik tweeted to say "#FreePalestine", a sentiment which has since been retweeted over 140,000 times. It's proven controversial though, with fans responding, "it's easy to hide behind your keyboard and talk, we'll see how youd react if rockets were constantly being thrown at you."

Other more aggressive reactions encouraged the One Direction singer to "kill himself", or to let them kill him instead.
Rihanna also recently tweeted the hashtag, but changed her mind moments later and deleted it after receiving a similarly heated reaction.
