The family of AC/DC's Malcolm Young have confirmed that he is suffering from dementia.

The band announced a new album at the end of last month, and also revealed that their guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young would be retiring from the band. A statement revealing the news said: "Unfortunately, due to the nature of Malcolm’s condition, he will not be returning to the band."

Young's family have now confirmed that he is suffering from dementia and has been moved into full-time care in Sydney. They released a statement to People magazine which read: "Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy."

Malcolm founded AC/DC along with his brother in 1973, and was a permanent fixture of the rock band for over 40 years.

AC/DC's new album Rock or Bust, their first in six years and first without Malcolm Young, is set for release on 1 December.
