Raphael Ravenscroft, the man behind one of the most famous sax solos in history on Gerald Rafferty's 'Baker Street', has died aged 60 from a suspected heart attack.
He was reportedly only paid £27 for the Rafferty session in 1978 (the cheque also reportedly bounced). It went on to earn the singer £80,000 a year in royalties. I
n a 2011 BBC radio interview, Ravenscroft said the song annoyed him. "I'm irritated because it's out of tune," he explained. "Yeah, it's flat. By enough of a degree that it irritates me at best."
During his remarkable career as a session musician Ravenscoft also worked with Pink Floyd, Abba, Marvin Gaye as well as recording with Daft Punk. He also arranged Maxine Nightingale's disco album Right Back Where We Started From in 1976.
