Here's one for the guitar fans out there, the original Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty prototype is up for auction.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Gibson archetype is set to go under the hammer on 19 February in New York. The instrument belonged to legendray guitarist Luthier Paul and is set to be sold by auction house Guernsey’s at Arader Galleries.
A run of the mill Les Paul retails for between £2,000 and £8,600 via the official website, with prices jumping considerably for specific and sought after models. To put in context the large amounts we're talking about, the Stratocaster from Dylan's 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance sold for £641,600. The Les Paul is expect to fetch similar amounts.
It was owned by Luthier Paul from 1954 to 1976 and was handed over to friend Tom Doyle. Doyle is auctioning the guitar from his private collection along with Chet Atkins’ Gretsch electric guitar, known as “Dark Eyes”.
