Music legend Elvis Presley’s first recording has reportedly sold for $300,000, roughly £200,000.
The Guardian reports that the auction took place on what would have been the singer’s 80th birthday. The prized possession is an acetate disc from 1953 which features ‘My Happiness,’ backed with ‘That’s When Your Heartaches Begin’. The item was recorded Presley himself, who was just 18 at the time.
Bidding for the item began at $50,000 (roughly £33,000) but eventually sold for $300,000 to an undisclosed bidder. The session to record the track only cost $4 and it is believed that Presley had to listen to the track at a friend’s house as his family did not own a record player.
Hundred’s of fans flocked to Memphis, Tennessee in order to join Presley’s family to celebrate the day. Presley’s former wife Priscilla, and their child Lisa Marie, along with Elvis’ grandchildren were all in attendance and sliced an eight-layer cake to celebrate the day together.
