Lou Reed on the Beatles: 'I thought they were garbage'

The late Velvet Underground frontman was not a fan

A lost interview with Lou Reed has revealed this contempt for both the Fab Four and the Velvet Underground's contemporaries.

Reminiscent of Chuck D's immortal "Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me", a lost Reed interview has revealed his unique distaste for The Beatles

“I never liked the Beatles,” Reed says in the interview with journalist Joe Smith. “I thought they were garbage. If you say, ‘Who did you like?’ I liked nobody.”

The comments date back to a 1987 interview which has recently been animated as part of the Blank On Blank series. Reed explained his former band's purpose was not only “to elevate the rock & roll song and take it where it hadn’t been taken before” but also outclass his contemporaries. He is particularly damning of those who attempt and fail to make their music more significant. "I mean they were just painfully stupid and pretentious, and when they did try to get, in quotes, ‘arty,’ it was worse than stupid rock & roll. What I mean by ‘stupid,’ I mean, like, The Doors.”
