Despite having previously appeared in campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana, Madonna has backed Elton John's recent boycott of the fashion label following their comments regarding IVF and same sex mrriage and adoption.
As previously reported, the fashion duo provoked worldwide outrage when they told Italy's Panorama magazine: "We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed."
Domenico Dolce's comments in particular were particularly controversial, stating: "You are born to a mother and a father – or at least that’s how it should be. "I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog."
Although Stefano Gabbana has since tried to defuse the situation ("It was never our intention to judge other people's choices. We do believe in freedom and love.") the damage has been done. Sir Elton John called for an international boycott which trended on Twitter and was subsequently backed by everyone from Courtney Love to Victoria Beckham.
Now Madonna has waded into the fray.
"All babies contain a soul however they come to this earth and their families," she wrote on Facebook. "There is nothing synthetic about a soul!! So how can we dismiss IVF and surrogacy? Every soul comes to us to teach us a lesson. God has his hand in everything even technology! We are arrogant to think Man does anything on his own. As above so below! Think before you speak."
