Celebrating its 10 year anniversary, Wireless Festival’s one-off Wireless 10 event at Finsbury Park yesterday looked like it was going to be a bit of a wash out early on. With the rain coming down hard during Bishop Nehru’s set and the Disturbing London/DJ Charlesy showcase, ponchos were aplenty but soon became unnecessary when the clouds parted in time for G-Eazy’s Main Stage performance.
With his career on an upward trajectory ever since the release of his debut album, These Things Happen, it was only a year ago that G was performing on a smaller stage. Introducing the Wireless crowd to his mother, who seemed more rock and roll than her son, the Bay Area rapper closed his set with popular single ‘I Mean It’.
With the walk between the two stages being a matter of minutes, unlike the time Wireless was held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park a couple of years ago, it was a lot easier to cram in as many artists as possible this time around.
The Pepsi Max stage looked more like a golden era rap fan’s dream line up, with the beautiful Jhene Aiko, Boy Better Know and ILOVEMAKONNEN snuck in for good measure, so watching the likes of De La Soul run through hits such as ‘Much More’ and ‘Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)’, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon perform tracks from the classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx LP, and Public Enemy, S1W’s and all, close out the stage was a beautiful thing. Reliving the best years of Hip Hop is always a pleasure, never a chore.
Main Stage highlights included performances from the ever energetic Chance The Rapper and hometown favourite Rita Ora, whose raunchy performance had the fans a little hot under the collar, but the crowd were obviously hyped about what headliner Drake was going to bring to the stage. His first UK performance since the release of his new album, If You're Reading This Its Too Late, Drake brought his Jungle Tour to the Wireless crowd, who all night he referred to as 'family' and told them he would be bringing his OVO Fest to the UK at some point.
Complete with a ton of pyro, which included fireworks at the close of his performance, Drake’s set consisted of fan favourites ‘Crew Love’, ‘Started From The Bottom’ and ‘Headlines’, new tracks ‘Know Yourself’, ‘Legend’ and ‘No Tellin’’, as well as his guest verses from Big Sean’s ‘Blessings’, ILOVEMAKONNEN’s ‘Tuesday’ and Nicki Minaj’s ‘Truffle Butter’, which sent the crowd into a frenzy. Drake is Wireless Festival’s favourite son, and last night’s performance proved exactly why.
