"Bless you all in the rain" Nick Mulvey laughs sweetly into the microphone, to a crowd ignorant of the drizzly conditions. They reply with adoration. He laughs, "You don’t seem unhappy!"
Unfortunately, the British summertime has prevailed during Mulvey’s set at Somerset House’s outdoor Summer Series. However, it hasn't stopped all ages from coming together to listen in awe to Mulvey’s folk stylings. If anything, it heightens the experience, giving everyone a break from the oppressive humidity of the day. An apt metaphor for the escapism in Mulvey’s music.
Somerset House provides a picturesque backdrop for Mulvey this evening, lit up spectacularly and filled to bursting with his ever-growing fanbase. Excitement is palpable amongst the jostling crowd before Mulvey himself appears – but as soon as he does, calm falls upon them. He commands them with enviable ease; and it’s unintentional.
He is a man of few words onstage; he seems to let the music speak for itself. The few words he does say are humble and kind. “I love you Nick Mulvey!” comes a shout from a few rows back as the rain gets heavier. “Love you too!” He responds with a smile. “Somerset House!” He shouts, lifting spirits in spite of the weather.
'Cucurucu' entrances the crowd as one of Mulvey’s most popular hits. He ends with 'Fever To The Form', the biggest moment of the night. Cellos and drums, guitars and tambourines combine to create three minutes of wonderful energy bathed in the purple light of Somerset House, sprinkled with rain, but accompanied by an outrageously happy crowd.
“Thank you for being with us tonight! Thank you for supporting me on this first record!” Mulvey gushes after taking a few pictures of his adoring crowd - a humble master of acoustic live performance.
