Kill Kenada

Anyone who wears a dress and adorns fairy lights in front of a predominantly chav crowd deserves a few whoops of encouragement, and such is the case for Kill Kenada’s front man, Tim Smithen. Tonight, Coventry’s Colosseum is packed full of punters looking to extend their bank holiday party, as the southern trio launch a heavy assault of indie-grunge rock upon them.

Despite the indie strong hold in the room, there are ‘others’ who stand there looking bemused at the tattooed singer as he jerks around the stage, wielding his bass like a weapon, in a blue flowery ensemble that a toilet cleaner would snub. He’s all smiles through his gnarling vocals, which come in thick waves of speech and shouts, that carry more enthusiasm than aggressive tones.

If you were to play Biffy Clyro, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters simultaneously then the resulting sprouting sounds would be similar to that of Kill Kenadas- which is a little grand for a mere three piece. Sat at the back of the stage is Eldge, pummelling his kit with the energy of a new battery, while guitarist Danny Williams provides the distorted riffs that give them their crisp acidity, amid occasional head-bangs.

The boys have been treading water on the scene for a couple of years now, but the reaction from the crowd tonight (and in the emerging press), to their two recent singles ‘In Your Throat’ and ‘Saline’, raises the question of how long before they ride that big crest with the big ones…
