Jacknife Lee takes a break from producing unit shifting bland-rock (hi, Snow Patrol) to growl saucily at us ‘I really love it and it’s making me money.’ What could he be referring to? Playing the role of musician, as opposed to behind the scenes knob-twiddler? Unlikely – great as this record is, it won’t pay the bills in quite the same way that the inexplicable hotcake of an album Eyes Open can.
Built around little more than a basic Casio keyboard motif atop a super-simple beat, Mr Lee mumbles distorted vocals languidly over the top and then seals it with the kind of gigantic sludgy blues riff Jack White would sell his own Meg for. It’s rather ace but more likely to soundtrack an expensively sexy advert than fill a dancefloor – let’s hope the next time Gary Lightbody calls, Jacknife Lee calmly hangs up and reforms amazing 90s rockers Compulsion instead. Go on Jacknife, you know it makes sense!
