In the new episode of cult series Blank on Blank, Wayne Coyne, the Flaming Lips frontman, is animated on the subject of death and its place in music. Watch the video below.
The interview, conducted by Jennifer Van Evra in 2002, is the latest release from Blank on Blank, the production company that unearths lost interviews and releases them with an animated video accompaniment.
In his episode, Wayne Coyne relives the story about how he was held at gunpoint whilst working at a Long John Silvers restaurant. The restaurant was robbed but the staff were not harmed and Coyne remembers the feeling of elation that crept up on him.
He goes on to talk about how facing death makes living more wonderful, because it is finite. In his experience, songs about death and loss and isolation resound more with an audience as people like to be able to relate to others about these fears.
He sums up by saying: "I'm pouring my guts out so they can feel like your guts at the same time."
