On the day of the Champions League draw, there is no better time to consider the chequered history of music and football. But could the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi learn from their guitar-wielding counterparts? Gigwise investigates.

Equally suited to being played in stadiums, football and music holds a long standing relationship. There have been dizzying highs ('Seven Nation Army' becoming an Italian terrace anthem) and terrifying lows (One Direction's Louis Tomlinson trying to buy part of Doncaster Rovers). But occcasionally there are moments where each team could learn from the other. Here is our five step guide to sporting success, inspired by musicians on the pitch.

You can find ticket details for the upcoming Champions League matches here.

1. Display sportsmanship, even under pressure
Britpop's series of blows between Liam Gallagher and Blur frontman Damon Albarn had some ugly moments but we all know that football transcends such boundaries. It was 1996 when the two put their differences aside and took to the pitch in the name of charity, hand in hand. They looked like they were going to play nice - right up until Gallagher tried to pull down Albarn's shorts.

 2. Watch for when the keeper is off his line
Soccer Aid has had some spectacular moments in its nine year history but nothing can top Serge Pizzorno's awesome lob of David Seaman. After all, whatever Ronaldhino can do, clearly Kasabian's skinny-jeaned guitarist can match.

3. Remember that mind games sometimes have the opposite effect
During one of his visits to the Soccer AM studios Noel Gallagher was asked to take part in their 'Car park Challenge' where you have to shoot the ball into a number of holes from the penalty spot, working your way from League 2 to the prestigious Champions League. During his opponent Liam Daish's preparation, Noel Gallagher can be heard saying "£20 says you don't do it..." It didn't work though. Daish nailed the kick and Noel promptly paid up.

4. Appropriate footwear is key.
Serge again - someone sign him up! In his car park challenge Serge scores an absolute screamer, flicks it up and unleashes an outrageous shot. All while wearing 'rockstar shoes'.

5. When in doubt, hoof it.
Rod Stewart doesn't mess about: the former Brentford FC apprentice whose house now boasts its own football pitch knows that sometimes brute force is all you need. When in doubt? Kick it. Kick it hard.
