Pete Townshend has admitted that he doesn't find playing gigs with The Who "fulfilling" and that he does them because he's "good at them" and "incredibly easy."
Townshend, 69, speaking to Uncut Magazine claims that whilst playing shows worldwide, he doesn't enjoy playing with The Who and doesn't enjoy living on the road. He said "The shows? I don't like them. I don't find them fulfilling. But I'm brilliant at it. I find it incredibly easy. I drift through it."
He went on to describe his performances as a pair of shoes, saying that he has reached a point where he won't ever disappoint people with what he does, just like a good cobbler. "It's like being able to make a pair of shoes, and knowing that you've got to a point that whenever you make a pair of shoes for somebody they're gonna last them for life."
He even went one step further saying that he would sometimes fantasizes about a particularly terrible performance. “There’s a desire I have to do a show which is crap,” he says. “Go out in front of a bunch of devoted Who fans and say, ‘Listen, you bunch of fucking cunts. Fuck off. Don’t come back…’”
