Charli XCX on Rihanna's new album, Bill Murray + the future

The Sucker star talks to us about Rihanna's Anti + progress on her own next record

"It's all been good - I ran away from Bill Murray in a hotel lobby, that was a highlight," smiles Charli XCX, looking back on her whirlwind year. "Actually, a lowlight, because I wish I had gone partying with him."

"He complimented my shoes, but I have kind of a massive crush on him so I just freaked out and was like 'eurrgh!' and ran."

I think we'd all do the same, overwhelmed by having our own Lost In Translation moment. It's no different for Charli XCX - despite now being a global phenomenon off the back of her huge album Sucker, launched by the massive 'I Love It' that she penned for Icona Pop.

So much does her reputation precede her, that Rihanna even invited her to work on her new album, Anti

"We did some sessions together for her new record, which was really cool - she's great," Charli tells Gigwise. "I don't know what's coming. I'm very excited for the album, I really like the album cover, the name, and I'm sure it's going to be amazing. When I was working with her I was super impressed because she was super in control of all of her shit. That album is going to be awesome."

She continues: "We did a few songs and to be honest, we did them a long time ago - so I can't really remember them. I think I have a sound when I write, so maybe there's some of that in there. But she was directing everything."

And has Charli been working on an album of her own?

"Yes, thats all I'm saying on that!" she replies, tight-lipped. "It's very vague, I don't want to give anything away. I'm just in the studio doing a lot of stuff. There's no like, definite direction or thing that's going on."

And it's sound? "It's going to be very pop". We wouldn't have it any other way.
