M.I.A has released a video for her new single 'Borders' which is the latest release from an ongoing project based around the concept of 'borders' - it's a moving observation on the global refugee situation. . Check it out below.
This film will eventually come out within a larger body of work in the form of an album and film experience called Matahdatah.
This latest video was directed by M.I.A over two months this summer and it tackles a global issue that she evidently feels very strong about. M.I.A released the first video on this topic called 'Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than a Border' earlier this year. That was made with handheld camera footage shot in West Africa and India.

This video by comparison is a more ambitious production and she's kept the creative control she had the first time around by directing and editing it herself. She tackles the poignant and harrowing topic of the West's neglect of refugees to chilling effect.
Shots in the video see her join a group of refugees as the climb dangeoursly high wire fences, crowd into over crowded boats and sail out to sea. The hook-laden hip hop track itself feels like it comes straight from the heart making the striking visuals all the more powerful.
