BBC Radio 6 Music has attracted a new record audience, according to the latest radio industry figures from Rajar.

The digital station, which prides itself on alternative and under-the-radar music has seen an increase in figures - reaching 2.34 million listeners, with it being the fifth consecutive quarter that the station has achieved record figures. Quite the achievement for a station which was almost scrapped back in 2010.

The Director of BBC Radio Helen Boaden said she was "delighted that more and more people are discovering the station's irresistible combination of outstanding alternative music and witty presenters".

While 6 Music is going from strength to strength, it's also reported that Nick Grimshaw's and Chris Evans' Breakfast shows on Radio 1 and 2 have fallen in listenersGrimshaw's 5.25 million weekly listeners between July and September, dropped 184,000 on the last quarter, while Evans' dropped by 414,000.

It is suggested that a change in listening habits could be responsible for the dip in figures however - with Ben Cooper, controller of Radio 1, stating the figures "should be seen alongside the increase to 1.5 million views a day on our YouTube channel and our 8.5 million users on social media".

6 Music showcased some of it's biggest acts recently, as the station took over the historic Maida Vale studios for a day of live sessions. Shows included performances from Placebo, The Pretenders and Wild Beasts. Check out our review here.
