Following the news of the singer-songwriter's death last week, Leonard Cohen's manager has confirmed the icon died in his sleep following a fall in the night.

The 82-year-old legendary artist passed away last Monday (November 7) at his Los Angeles home. His manager Robert B. Kory has now confirmed the cause of his death by releasing a statement to The New York Times - explaining his death was "sudden, unexpected and peaceful" and that ""Leonard Cohen died during his sleep following a fall in the middle of the night on Nov. 7."

Earlier this week, Cohen's son Adam said a low-key funeral had already taken place in the singer's hometown of Montreal, releasing a statement via Facebook: "My sister and I just buried my father in Montreal. With only immediate family and a few lifelong friends present, he was lowered into the ground in an unadorned pine box, next to his mother and father. Exactly as he'd asked,".  Cohen went on to thank fans for "kind messages, for the outpouring of sympathy and for your love of my father."

A more public tribute is planned to take place in LA at a later date.

Cohen had previously been open to the subject of death while working on his final material, and while discussing unfinished work with The New Yorker said: "I don’t think I’ll be able to finish those songs. Maybe, who knows? And maybe I’ll get a second wind, I don’t know. But I don’t dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy. I don’t dare do that." before confessing he was "ready to die".

Leonard Cohen had released his fourteenth studio album You Want It Darker in October.
