Butch Trucks, a founding member of The Allman Brothers who died on Tuesday (January 24) aged 69, shot himself in the head in front of his wife, according to police reports.

The Miami Herald reports that a transcript of the 911 call made from their West Palm Beach home quotes a “hysterical” unidentified woman caller who was unable to complete full sentences telling the dispatcher that “my husband just shot himself” and that she had witnessed him pulling the trigger.

Trucks, ranked as one of the world’s top ten drummers by Rolling Stone magazine, was still breathing when police arrived on the scene, but died soon afterwards. An investigation is underway although the police do not suspect foul play.
