Just stop and try and try and get your head around this: Kendrick Lamar is leading the MTV Video Music Award nominations with eight tips of the hat for his ‘HUMBLE’ video, including Video Of The Year, Artist Of The Year and Best Hip-Hop Video Of The Year.
Amazing, isn’t it? No, not Kendrick’s nominations. They’re deserved. But this seems to suggest that MTV are like, actually showing music videos sometime during their schedule. Really? The last time we looked when casually channel surfing, the one-time supporter of music videos was broadcasting a combination of drunkards, wannabes and morons doing their do in an attempt to duck out of gainful employment.
But no, they’re hosting actual video awards. And speaking of which, Katy Perry and The Weeknd are bringing up the rear with five nominations each including Video Of The Year, Best Editing and Best Visual Effects.
And there’s also a change to the categories. MTV have decided to do away with gender specific categories, so you can wave goodbye to nominations for the likes of Best Female Video and Best Male Video. They’ve been amalgamated into the all-embracing Artist Of The Year Award. Could this mean that the running time of the show will be cut? We’ll just have to wait and see.
And that’s not the only change. A new Best Fight Against The System category has been added which supposedly celebrates video that shine a light on social injustices. Logic, Big Sean, Alessia Cara and John Legend are among the nominees.
The full list of nominees is available on the MTV VMA website. The awards take place on August 27.
