Boy George has spoken out in support of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' LGBT-celebrating hit 'Same Love', saying he doesn't think the record would have had the same impact if a gay rapper had made the track.
The track has faced some criticism from members of the gay community (rapper Le1f famously lambasted it, quipping "gay people don't care about your video about gay people") but Boy George believes a straight rapper recording the track was an advantage.
"If it had been a gay rapper that had done Same Love I think it probably wouldn’t have had the same impact," he told News LTD. "It’s a weird thing about our culture. I think 'Same Love' is a great record, I don’t care if he’s straight or gay, it doesn’t matter. It shouldn’t matter, but unfortunately it does.

"If you’re gay doing that song people think you’re preaching," he continued. "No, it’s my life. It’s the same as a guy speaking about his girlfriend. For some reason when you’re gay, people think you only talk about being gay. I don’t, actually. My sexuality takes up about three hours a month. At a push. And I’m sure that’s the same for a lot of straight people."
"If you look at how much you actually get down to business it’s really not as much of a priority as people think it is," the former Culture Club frontman added.
'Same Love' was one of the biggest hits of 2013, going platinum twice in the US, where it sold over 2 million units. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and vocalist Mary Lambert also performed the track at the Grammy Awards in February alongside Madonna and Queen Latifah.
