Prosecutors in New Zealand have reportedly dropped murder-related charges against AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd.
Earlier this week, 60-year-old Rudd was charged with making threats to kill, as well as the possession of drugs methamphetamine and cannabis. The arrest was made after his house in Tauranga was raided. It is reported that the 60-year-old rock drummer instigated a plot to hire a hit-man to kill two men.
Now, The Associated Press reports that the murder charges have been dropped. It is said that Rudd's lawyer Paul argued that he was arrested by police without consulting prosecutors - before Tauranga Crown Solicitor Greg Hollister-Jones decided that there was not enough evidence to warrant the charge of attempting to procure murder.
However, the drummer still faces charges of threatening murder, possession of methamphetamine and marijuana. The charges carry a potential sentence of up to seven years.
In the wake of the shocking news, the remaining band members have issued a joint statement, detailing how Rudd's arrest will not affect their release plans or forthcoming tour.
The statement reads: "We've only become aware of Phil's arrest as the news was breaking. We have no further comment. Phil’s absence will not affect the release of our new album Rock or Bust and upcoming tour next year."
Rudd, a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, was in the classic AC/DC line-up before being kicked out of the band in 1984. He joined again 1994. His recent absence from press shots and video filming has prompted speculation as to whether he is still in the band.
Meanwhile, AC/DC will be releasing their new album Rock or Bust on 1 December - their first without guitarist Malcolm Young who is suffering with dementia.
