Having never met a strange recording technique he didn't like, Aphex Twin has revealed he's asked a Chinese programmer to devise 'mutant' software for him.
Speaking to German magazine Groove (via Fact), Richard James said "I’ve actually recently hired a Chinese programmer to make a music software for me. It’s taking the concept of mutation into music software. You give the program some sounds you made and then it gives you six variations of it and then you choose the one you like most and then it makes another six and it kind of keeps trying to choosing the variations by itself."
James went on to expalin. "Basically it starts with a sound, analyzes it, then does different versions of variations. It randomizes, it compares all of them to the original and then it picks the best one. It sounds totally awesome, but it needs to be tweeked a little bit. I will continue with this. I have a whole book full of ideas for software and instruments.”
The whole interview is well worth a read, not least for the fact that James confirms he really leave 80 unreleased Squarepusher tracks on a plane, how he feels Coldplay ripped him off, why Skrillex is welcome to drive his tank and also that he still wants to get Captain Birdseye to give out acid at a boat party.
Aphex Twin's latest album Syro is out now and achieved his highest chart position of his career.
