Chris Martin has been announced as the curator for Global Citizen Festival for the next 15 years.
The Coldplay front man, will be guiding the line ups for the Central Park festival, which has previously played host to Jay Z, Fun, Stevie Wonder, Foo Fighters and Alicia Keys. It is part of the Global Poverty Project and Martin aims to push the agenda of the 17 sustainable development goals proposed by the United Nations.
Billboard reports that Martin announced the position at Locanda Verde restaurant on 13 February: “At first I thought, ‘How on earth do you make 17 things famous?’ And then I thought, ‘By making them as glamorous as possible, with very noticeable people.’”
Martin added: “It’s remarkable that, with 193 countries and 7 billion people, we only have to do these 17 things and life gets better for a lot of people. And as long as you ask Beyoncé to say one of them and [former UN secretary-general] Kofi Annan to say another one, it becomes something that kids talk about.”
The first concert under Martin's guidance is scheduled for 26 September at Central Park, with Global Citizen's First Earth Day to follow at the National Mall in Washington on 18 April. Acts are due to be announced at the end of February.
Martin also confirmed that he had been in touch with both Bono and Bob Geldof, to check his concert doesn't conflict with Product Red and Live Aid.
“I spoke to Bob and said, ‘How can we help?’ Everyone has this togetherness vision, which sounds a little hippie at first – but the more you think about it, the more it makes sense,” said Martin. “The reason we wanted to get involved with [Global Citizen] was because they include everybody, all NGOs.”
