Wu-Tang's one-of-a-kind album can't be released until 2103

Unless the buyer wants to buy out for a substantial fee

Wu-Tang Clan's Once Upon A Time In Shaolin has an 88 year copyright Photo:

Takin vinyl fetishism to new heights, Wu-Tang's one-of-a-kind record has a copyright that prevents it from being released to the public until 2103.

As previously reported, only one copy of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin will be available as a one-off art piece. According to the auction page for Once Upon A Time In Shaolin, the record has an 88 year copyright on it, in order to prevent it being released commercially. The Paddle8 page, also features essays, music and artwork from RZA, writing from Wu-expert Chris Norris along with a conversation betwen RZA and rapper Cilvaringz.

“When I think of who will come to own Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, I want them to recognize the historical value of what they’re collecting,” RZA writes. “I’m not one for hoping as a rule, but I really hope its guardian is the kind of person who finds appreciation and value in every artistic expression. Because this work was made to be appreciated.”

However it does remark that “a scenario where a philanthropist buys the album and releases it for free” could become a reality. Although considering the likely selling price, that would be one hell of a charitable act.

RZA also added that following the response to the underwhelming Better Tomorrow. “it feels almost certain that Once Upon A Time In Shaolin will be the final Wu-Tang Clan album.”
