Happy Birthday Kim Gordon! As the Sonic Youth icon turns 61, take a moment to show some respect for legendary bassists everywhere. Sure, everyone loves the frontman and bows down to worship the crazy axe skills of the world's best guitarists. Hell, people will even go wild for the drummer during an insane solo. But not very often do the bassists of the world get the credit they deserve.
Stood at the side of the stage, they're the glue that holds a band together. However it's one thing to have rhythm - it's another to be totally awesome at it.
From the mad skills of Muse's Chris Wolstenholme to iconic stature of Peter Hook via the hypnotic cool of Warpaint's Jenny Lee Lindberg, the scissor-kicking political pomp of Nicky Wire and the piercing presence of The xx's Oliver Sim - these are the four-stringed heroes that deserve your attention. These are the 23 coolest bassists in music today.
