Taken from their new album ‘Playing The Angel’, Depeche Mode’s new double A Side single has all the filthy darkness of Soft Cell’s 'Tainted Love' mixed with the sing along appeal of a Chas n' Dave record. Lead track 'John the Revelator' has a gospel edge to it that grates slightly towards the end. Full of computer bleeps, handclaps and jerky synths this is perfect for shimmying around the dancefloor to. 'Lillian' is dirgy and downbeat, sounding rather similar to Garbage's older material. The only drawback is that the rhyming is really club singerish, a poor imitation of what they used to be.
