Arctic Monkeys mania: 'Why'd You Only Cover Me When You're High'

Nah. They're not high, they're just singing a song

'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High' seemed to be everywhere last year and with good reason. The track has a hugely broad appeal, mixing a laidback R&B groove with indie rock, into exactly the kind of style mash-up that works ingeniously well. The broad appeal and success of the track also meant that countless bands have since covered it. For better and for worse...

We've seen and heard a lot of cover versions over the past six months. Here are the standouts. Enjoy (or not).

 1. Queens of the Stone Age

Josh Homme - a legend. But he really couldn't be arsed with this one, could he? Still, pretty cool nonetheless.

2. Jagwar Ma

The band who sound like we wish the Stone Roses would on their new material take a novel approach to the track here. Utilising hip-hop style samples that would more akin to a lowrider's subwoofer, they build upon the groove of the track and turn into something entirely new.

3. Miley Cyrus

While Cyrus doesn't do the worst job ever, it certainly isn't any good. There are bum notes all over the place and a poor attempt to introduce a country American vibe to the vocals. Approach with caution.

4. The Vamps

Who better to cover a song about being intoxicated and booty calls than these One Direction knock off whippersnappers. Wonder what their VERY young audience made of this one...

5. James Arthur

The worst thing about this interpretation from X Factor villain James is that he chooses to spit his whack bars all over it. The track didn't need a rap breakdown, it really didn't...

6. Hudson Taylor

We didn't want to end on too much of a bum note, so we thought we'd take a look at these guys who've been making steady waves this year. While it's not going to set the world on fire, the Hudson Taylor version incorporates the original yet strips it down into an interesting little acoustic medley. Not bad.
