Phil Collins has announced, finally, that he's exited a period of retirement that lasted the whole of four years. Now he's ready to get back in the studio and on the road.

The Genesis man released his last solo album of original material back in 2002 and a Motown classics record in 2010 at which point he announced his retirement to take care of important family matters.

According to Consequence of Sound, excitingly, Collins revealed: "I'm no longer officially retired. The horse is out of the stable and I'm raring to go."

What makes this event so much more impressive is that this news came just five days after a major surgery on the drummer's back. Maybe he had a divine experience while under? Earlier this year Collins was diagnosed with serious back and hip problems. "The doctor had to go in there, work on the sciatic nerve and take my back apart and unscramble the mess." This is great news, what is amazing news is this: "He said to me, ‘If you want to play drums again, all you have to do is practice."

There is a tour planned for Collins' solo project but don't rule out a Genesis reunion completely. Collins has said that he needs to recover fully before there's any chance of him getting behind a kit for Genesis.

"No matter what happens, I can go out there, play piano and sing. I’m just in a very happy place right now." Isn't that just wonderful to hear?
