Normally we’d be gushing about the limited edition vinyl that has a crazy colour or picture, but this time the reggae and Ska band Slightly Stoopid have taken stoner music and vinyl to a whole new level.
Vinyl is undoubtedly integrating its way back into modern life. With sales at a 28-year high in the US, it was sooner rather than later that stoners decided to experiment with vinyl and marijuana.
The hash pressing of the record has had two prototypes so far, both costing around $6000 in bubble hash. The other $1000 was spent on producing the hash vinyl itself at Los Angeles vinyl-mastering studio Capsule Labs. The first pressing, explains Silverback Music’s Jon Philips, provided “a passable sound”, although it was soon consumed by “office potheads”, leading to the second pressing, producing a “questionable audio”.
The third pressing will be the final prototype of the hash vinyl, and while it will be technically playable, Jon Philips thinks it’s better to look at: “It’s not something you’re going to plop on your turntable over and over again. For now, this is an art piece.”
Alongside the art piece, Jon Philips explained their other project, a branded bubble hash from Slightly Stoopid themselves, “Originally, we wanted to do this to bring awareness to legalisation,” he says. This bubble hash is hoped to be available at dispensaries in the US. A proportion of proceeds made from the bubble hash will be donated to cancer research.
With cannabis being legal in 28 states so far in the US, it was inevitable that one day a stoner would try and make music out of hash. It’s possible it may be auctioned off for charity, or to a huge Slightly Stoopid fan that wants to get very, very high.
