Big name stars from the rock world including Slash, andrew WK, Nikki Sixx and more have taken to Twitter to pay their respects to Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died aged 49.

The Slayer co-founder passed away due to liver failure, after being bitten by a spider and contracting flesh-eating disease necrotizing fasciitis in 2011, as he failed to seek treatment immediately after the bite.

Slash from Guns N Roses wrote, "Tragic & shocking news about Jeff Hanneman. He is going to missed by so many. What a sad day for Metal. RIP man."

Dave Mustaine from Megadeth tweeted, "Tonight one less star will be shining and sadly, the stage got just a little bit darker. Jeff Hanneman 1964-2013."

Andrew WK wrote, "Jeff Hanneman will always be a metal god," and David Draiman from Disturbed posted, "RIP to a titan of metal."

Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue posted, "Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue said: "Just heard the sad news about Jeff Hanneman of Slayer. My condolences to his family,the band and all his friends and fans..RIP"

Papa Roach also chimed in, writing on their official account, "We’re saddened by the death of SLAYER guitarist, Jeff Hanneman. Our prayers and best wishes to SLAYER and Jeff’s family."


Metal stars have been posting tributes to Jeff Hanneman on Twitter

Metallica wrote simply, "R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman," and Testament posted, "R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman, brother in thrash."

In Flames called it a 'tragedy', saying, "We are so devasted to hear about the passing of Jeff Hanneman. One of the greatest have passed on and please, stop for a moment and pay your respect to this fantastic man. This is a tragedy.”

Hanneman is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry.
